Somelos was founded in 1958 under the name Sociedade Teixeira de Melo & Filhos Lda., dedicating itself to the production of yarns, and later on to the production of cotton fabrics.
In 1971 the company changed its name to Indústrias Têxteis Somelos S.A and turned into a Corporation. Not long after, in 1974, the Dyeing and Finishing business areas became active and Somelos became a vertical company.
In the beginning of the nineties, and to face the new market challenges, Somelos spun out its production and services areas, a major restructuring process, which was pioneer in the textile industry. 12 companies were created, all under one holding - Somelos SGPS - that was detained by the founder's family.
With this new approach, the companies now have a professional and autonomous administration, each seeking objectives in its own market, facing different and demanding clients in terms of innovation, quality, service and flexibility.
All the companies are situated in a private industrial park, with an area of 300.000 square meters, which include several social infrastructures for the employees.
Somelos looks to the future by developing its activity in demanding business areas and facing constant evolution, so it can continue to serve its clients as it has been doing for the past 50 years.
